Hi Clare,
Yep, you can restrict groups based on user group. To do this, go to Discussion Board > Boards and then select the Board you want to edit the permissions. From that settings page, scroll down to the "Permitted viewer roles" and "Permitted poster roles" and select the user groups accordingly.
