Hi Elyse,
You can hide all discussion through Boards. You can achieve it by selecting roles that are permitted to view Discussion Board topics. Please refer to the attached screenshot.
And then create a new page and paste the shortcode of your boards or update the shortcode you already have on your topics' page. This way the user will be asked to login/register to see the topics.
