Is there a function for members to add their own avatars (profile pic)? Or is it linked to Gravatar?
If my site already has member avatars, will it carry over to Discussion Board?

It uses the WP method to display avatars, which is Gravatars by default, but if you're using an alternative method then it should respect that.
