I just registered and logged in at the page you linked to, so the log-in process seems to be working fine. Can you provide some more information about what isn't working for you? Please remember that if you are already logged in, you won't see the form so you'll need to test in another browser where you are not logged in.
To keep the DB private, you just specify users roles in Discussion Board > Settings > User tab - e.g. in the 'Viewing permission' field, select the user roles who can view the DB. Anyone else won't be able to see it.
